Suncare Season: How to Protect Your Skin from Within

The weather is getting warmer, and the days are longer which means we’re spending more time outside. While sun protection is important all year round, these warmer months when the sun is the strongest are particularly important. This doesn’t just mean protecting yourself when you’re at the beach – we absorb UV rays in day-to-day activities like walking the dog and while driving.

We highly recommend wearing sunscreen daily to protect yourself from UV damage. In addition to sunscreen, there are foods you can eat to provide additional protection, and of course, taking Renew + Protect Daily. Let’s explore some options!

Tomatoes:

This study found that people who consumed tomato paste daily for ten weeks experienced less UV damage than those who did not. Interestingly, this is because tomato paste is rich in lycopene, a type of carotenoid that may actually be present in higher concentrations in processed tomatoes than fresh. Carotenoids are nutrients found in plants (fruits and vegetables) that provide health benefits including antioxidant properties. These pigments give fruits and vegetables their yellow, orange and red colour.  Another study found that eating tomatoes cooked in olive oil increased the absorption of lycopene.

Purple Berries:

This hot tip comes from our eBook, The Ultimate Guide to Skin Health and Longevity. Did you know that plants produce color partly to protect themselves from the sun? Well, those same intense and beautiful red, purple, and blue hues, can also protect you! The roughly 600 naturally occurring, water-soluble, intensely colored anthocyanins, particularly rich in berries, absorb blue-green light and UV rays. They are found in many foods including blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, haskap, strawberries, cherries, chokecherries, currents, purple grapes, beets, red cabbage, and red beans.

Watermelon:

Another great source of lycopene is watermelon, which is also very hydrating! Keep this tasty and refreshing snack on hand all summer to boost skin health and help protect against sun damage.
