Carotenoids and Skin Health

May 19, 2020    |   Brooke Stephen + Anna Jean Reid    |    Skin Climate, Skin Health, Skin Protection

Carotenoids. Have you heard of them? Maybe, maybe not. Carotenoids are plant pigments, and powerful antioxidants that provide numerous health benefits. Most commonly, carotenoids are known for benefitting eye-health and other age-related conditions, but their importance to skin care is becoming more apparent.

Lutein & Zeaxanthin

Two of the most commonly known carotenoids are lutein and zeaxanthin. While there is currently no Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) for these nutrients, they are a healthy part of our diet because we cannot make them ourselves internally.

But how do they help your skin?

As powerful antioxidants, lutein and zeaxanthin help protect light-exposed tissue and prevent oxidative tissue damage by combatting free radical stress that contributes to signs of skin aging. Free radicals negatively impact your Skin Climate, accelerating the aging process. Providing your body  with antioxidants helps fight this oxidative stress, reducing damage caused by free radicals and helping you optimize your Skin Climate.

In a study completed in 2007, healthy women, with signs and symptoms of premature aging, who received a daily dose of 10 mg lutein and 0.6 mg zeaxanthin had significant increase in skin lipids, hydration, elasticity and resistance to sunburn following 12 weeks of treatment.  Similarly, skin luminosity, tone and resistance to sunburn was improved in women with mild to moderate dry skin after supplementing with 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin daily.

Getting your Daily Dose

Since we don’t make lutein and zeaxanthin internally, getting enough through diet and supplementation is key. Some great sources of this carotenoids include egg yolks, kiwis, grapes, spinach, zucchini and different types of squash.

In addition, daily supplementation of Bend Beauty Anti-Aging Formula contains clinically supported doses of both lutein and zeaxanthin to protect your skin from oxidative damage and free radical stress. If you haven’t already begun taking Anti-Aging Formula, now is a great time to start.
